Season 2 Winner - Benji Schwimmer
So You Think You Can Dance Season 3 airs its first results show of the season and, unlike some reality shows, the voters don't have the whole say. They will ultimately choose the bottom three, but after that it's up to the judges. And I feel that is the way it should be. What do we amateurs really know, anyway? Let's leave it to the experts, at least in the early stages of the competition.
The night starts off with a crazy, abstract dance to a slow moving hip hop song. Its cutting edge and super cool. All the girls are dressed like a Go-Go dancing version of Uma Thurman from Pulp Fiction and the guys remind me of Vincent Vega. It was a Wade Robson routine, and really had to be seen to be believed. Host Cat Deeley looks beautiful as always, and it's time to get down to business and relay some early results.
Jaimie and Hok: they are safe, as they very well should be.
Anya and Danny: They are safe also.
Sabra and Dominic: They're sadly in the bottom three. The competition is stiff this year. They'll be performing solo routines at the end of the show.
Lacey and Kameron: They're safe. The Mia Michaels routine they performed was really something.
Ashlee and Ricky: A lot of people predicted they would be in the bottom three. And...they are. The crowd is absolutely IRATE! Nigel is not surprised, but saddened. He wants to see them do what they do best: contemporary.
Sara and Jesus: They're safe for another week.
Jessi and Pasha: they're safe as they should be.
Lauren and Neil: They're safe from elimination this week.
Faina and Cedric: They're the third and last couple to be in the bottom three for the week.
Shauna and Jimmy: They are safe, somewhat surprisingly.
Mary Murphy seemed beside herself at the decisions and almost starts crying. Benji Schwimmer, last year's winner, comes out to talk with Cat. He then does a routine of his own, and it's pretty good. Now onto the dance solos for our bottom three couples. Sabra is first up for her solo: She performs to a David Gray song, and she's good, very athletic, lots of splits. Dominic is next, and really just rips the stage apart, doing his B-Boy thing. Ashlee takes the stage next and she dances to a Streisand song, which is was a bit surprising and bland. Ricky is up and he does his contemporary thing and he's very good, has good form, but he's still kind of strange. Faina comes out and does her solo to some Christina Aguilera, which is pretty sexy. Cedric comes out and does his thing, and his routine is crazy hot with his unique freestyle/hip-hop/contemporary moves.
Cat, Ricky Palomino & Ashlee Langas
Now, the judges go back stage to decide who will be heading home. It's going to be so difficult letting any of the dancers go at this point because they’re all so good! The judges soon return and it's then time for the final results – they’ve made their final decisions. Sabra is safe, and Faina is safe, which means....Ashlee Langus is going home. A lot of people seem disappointed at this decision including the judges as they admit its unfortunate she didn't get to show off more of her talents. Now time for the guy’s elimination time. Cedric is safe which is cool – he’s talented. Dominic is safe and I think everyone is happy about that as well. So that means Ricky Palomino is going home. Somewhere in the audience, Mia Michaels is probably really pissed!
It's a testament to the talent level of the performers this year on So You Think You Can Dance that the first two eliminated contestants were supremely talented and recipients of (arguably) the most flattering praise from the judges prior to that week's performance show. Ashlee Langas was told that she dances like people would dance in heaven. Ricky Palomino was told by Mia Michaels that he was her favorite male dancer in the entire competition. High praise; unfortunately, it didn't mean much.
Ashlee Langas and Ricky Palomino were sent home by the judges after the pair was voted into the bottom three couples by a ruthless American populace. Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, and Dan Karaty had tough decisions to make, tougher than they likely anticipated. Normally, one would expect the first elimination episode to be an easy one, with the “fat” getting trimmed and fans generally indifferent towards the departed contestants. Not the case with this particular elimination. Ricky Palomino, especially, was obviously talented and had the ability to make it very far on the show.
The decision they came to (eliminating Ashlee and Ricky) wasn't a terribly popular one, but it wasn't going to be regardless of who they chose. Everyone up on the chopping block was good. This all adds up to a huge positive for the audience, who will get to enjoy an insane level of talent on So You Think You Can Dance this season.
