This episode of Paranormal State showed a recovering addict intent to stay straight and sober who wrestles with a demonic force. PRS attempt to make the force go away with the assistance of Chip Coffey and a priest.
Ryan Buell and the rest of the PRS group were in York, Pennsylvania for a particular case. “We were contacted by a guy named Wes”, Ryan said to everyone in a morning meeting. “Recently married they have three kids. They moved into a house recently and immediately they started experiencing paranormal activity.” Ryan informed his PRS that the couple saw black shadows in their home as well as feeling as if they were touched.
Josh, the tech specialist, mentioned that things got to be so bad for them that they had to stay in a hotel just to get some relief.
The group learned that Wes was a former drug addict and had experienced a major accident in the past. “He was a steel worker”, said Katrina. “And he had his arm severed. They reattached it, but he was on a lot of medication from that.” She informed the group that he did get help from a rehab center and got clean.
“If it is paranormal”, Ryan told the gang, “It seems as if something is trying to drag Wes down.”
On the first day of the investigation, PRS traveled to the client’s home in York. Wes greeted everyone at the door and seemed very pleased and relieved to have everyone in his home.
Wes gave everyone the tour of his home which was plagued with activity. He showed them the master bedroom. “Most of the activity starts in this room”, he said. “Just last night I had claw marks on my carpet… it scared the hell out of me.”
Wes then took everyone into the lower level of his house. “The day the pastor came out when we were blessing my house”, he explained, “this demon or whatever actually got in me. It felt like something sat there and hit me in the chest.”
Ryan asked him what he thought initiated the paranormal activity. “I got the necropolis tattoo on my back”, Wes replied. “It’s the gateways of Hell. My church told me that even tattoos can carry an opening.” He even showed Ryan the tattoo which covered 75% of his back.
During his interview with Ryan, Wes explained that he began to use drugs when he had the surgery done on his arm after it was severed and that he had used the drugs until 12 months before. He also told Ryan that he had a heart attack which prompted him to get some help.
Jen, Wes’ wife, had her interview with Katrina and mentioned that Wes proposed to her after he sought to get treatment. “But when we moved here, all hell broke loose”, she said. “I watched my husband every day being tormented.”
Ryan even interviewed one of Wes’ kids whose name is Jordan. ‘One time it got so bad here”, he said, “that something slapped me in the back of the neck. It scared me and I started crying.”
In his interview with Wes, Ryan asked him if he had any suicidal tendencies. “Sometimes in the morning… sometimes throughout the day”, Wes replied solemnly.
“I am done. I can’t deal with this anymore!” exclaimed Jen to Katrina. “I can’t deal with this house. This is not home. This is Hell.”
Ryan had received a lot of information but he was still unsure if there was indeed a paranormal activity involved. To get another perspective, experienced psychic medium Chip Coffey arrived at the home to see what he could pick up energetically.
After he assured Ryan that he knew nothing of the case, he walked into the home and explored the rooms. Ryan followed closely behind him.
He stood in the living room. “I feel very disoriented in this room”, Coffey said. “There is stuff that you don’t know yet.” Coffey then went upstairs into the master bedroom where he really felt uncomfortable. “I don’t like this upstairs. I feel very agitated up here.”
“Are you saying the spirit feels agitated up here?” Ryan asked him.
“Yeah”, Coffey answered after a period of silence. He then told Ryan that his mood shifted to depression and that he had to get out of the house quickly. Once outside, Coffey told Ryan that he felt much better.
“I don’t like this house”, he said to Ryan. “You don’t know the whole story about this yet. I’d love to see more questions answered.”
The PRS gang prepared for dead time with the clients because Coffey thought that it would be good if they were there. It didn’t take long for the noises and the weird sounds to come forth. Upon the request that the force were to do something bigger, Katrina was attacked. “It is hard to sit up”, she said. She told the group that it felt as if someone were lightly stabbing her in the back. Coffey then went to a slight trance to try to communicate with the spirit. From the tech headquarters, which had the night vision cameras everywhere, noticed that Wes was eerily silent throughout the whole ordeal.
“How come Wes is so quiet?” asked Sergey from Tech HQ. After he communicated that to Ryan, Ryan asked Wes how he was holding up. “I feel it’s around here now”, he said shifting in his seat.
Coffey shone his flashlight in Wes’ face. “He’s the one who talks to you”, he said. “Wanna come clean with us? Want to tell us what he really says to you?”
After some hesitancy from her husband Jen told the group what she understood of the situation. “It told him that it wanted him to kill his whole family”, she said.
“It told me that it doesn’t want my family around”, Wes said.
“And he was thinking about offing himself because it was trying to make him do it and he didn’t want to do it”, Jen said tearfully.
Ryan was grave. “Wes, if you are feeling these feelings, you are a major risk to you and your family.”
“You gotta get out”, Coffey said to Wes.
On the second day of investigation, Ryan refused to rule out some type of mental handicap in the case involving Wes and his family so arrangements were made for Wes to see a mental health specialist.
“We spent about two hours together”, reported the doctor during his follow up with Ryan via phone. “Wes is not clinically insane , he doesn’t have schizophrenia. I tested him for eight different drugs and the tests all came back negative.”
With the new information that he had received, Ryan then felt comfortable to entertain the notion that a malignant spirit was wrecking havoc on their home. As a precaution, he decided to have the entire family leave the house while the group investigated. Sergey brought in a new equipment for the group to use in the case.
“It takes readings from the environment and puts it into words”, explained Sergey about the equipment.
On the second session of dead time, the team, armed with Sergey’s new device was ready to communicate with whatever was in that house.
“Why are you in this house?” Ryan asked? “Pain”, replied the device in an electronic voice. “What kind of force are you?” he asked.
“Demon”, said the device.
On the third day of the investigation, Ryan called famed demonologist Lorraine Warren for some assistance on the case.
“He’s vulnerable. He’s very very vulnerable”, said Warren after Ryan briefed her on the case. “Get a priest to the house now”.
Two days later, Ryan was able to convince a priest to come out to do a deliverance ritual for Wes. The priest’s name was Bob Bailey and he was with the Roman Catholic church. Ryan reported in his director’s log that Wes was in good spirits while out of the house, but there was a strong caution to be prepared for anything that could go awry.
“In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit”, began the priest in is rite, “We confidently undertake to repel the attacks and deceits of the Devil…”
With a crucifix in hand, the priest continued the ritual with Ryan in attendance. Wes began to feel very uncomfortable. The exorcism had just begun.
“Wes what can you feel now?” Ryan asked him. “I feel as if this thing don’t want to leave”, he said to Ryan.
Ryan watched intently as Wes’ face contorted in pain. “Do you feel as if it is off you now?” Wes replied yes. “It looks as if you had been in battle”, replied the priest.
“It feels like it man”, replied Wes feeling exhausted.
In his final meeting with the client, Ryan discussed some things with Wes as they walked down a street on a sunny day. “I really want to stress that this problem will not go away overnight”, said Ryan. “We are going to continue to help you find a counselor that you are happy with.”
“Cool”, said Wes happily. “I appreciate you reaching out to me. It makes me feel like a person again.”
To date, Wes made no more homicidal threats to his family and is going into business to make Christian-themed tattoos.
