Hometown History - Visiting New York City

A one man act.

A small, red-headed kid takes in the sights of the Big Apple – his eyes full of wonder, his mind spinning with ideas . . . his name, Adam Savage.
Last week, Realitybug readers were introduced to the wonderful, quiet town of Marshall, Mi - Jamie's hometown. A small town, steeped in history that brought forth the quiet, intuitive Jamie Hyneman. This week, the trip is a little further east, to the city that never sleeps.
So, where did this zany, red-haired scientist get his start? Where most zany, red-haired scientists do, New York City.

Adam lived in New York because of his father’s job, a muppeteer for Sesame Street. Adam appeared in a few episodes, voiced a few characters. As a teen he appeared in a Billy Joel video and later a Charmin toilet paper commercial.

Adam found his real passion behind the scenes. He was a fashion designer, helped with several commercials, worked for George Lucas’s special effects studio and is an artist who has had several showings.
The mini Adam was raised in Westchester County, a suburb of the city, with about 950,00 residents. Westchester, often referred to as the Golden Apple, was named after Chester, England. The county, located in southeast New York, is 500 square miles – divided into North, Central and South sub regions.

Westchester County Flag.

The first Europeans to settle were sponsored by the Dutch West India Company in the 1620s to 30s. It was one of the ortigional counties in the Province of New York.

The publisher of the New York Journal in 1733, John Peter Zenger, covered the account of an election held at St. Paul's Church in the town of Eastchester (now Mount Vernon) and was arrested and tried for seditious libel. He was acquitted and thereby established the legal precedent for "freedom of the press." This later was incorporated as a basic freedom in the U.S. Bill of Rights.

Westchester County has 6 cities, 19 towns and 20 villages. Any land area in the county that is not contained in one of the cities is in a town.

Today it is considered one of the most desirable suburbs in New York City. It’s interesting to thing of how similar each personality is to the town that raised them. It is that perfect dichotomy that makes each MythBuster episode so great to watch. It wouldn’t be the same if Jamie wasn’t trying not to laugh at Adam, dressed like a caveman
