Reality TV is nothing new....

With the excitement of modern technology with its internet, i-pods, blackberries and whatnot, it is easy to forget the fact that the concept of reality television is nothing new. In fact, it is almost as old as television itself.

In 1948, Allen Funt debuted the show, “Candid Camera” which was a spin-off of his radio show “Candid Microphone”. This show was about how regular people reacted to practical jokes while unknowingly being filmed on camera. Talent shows like “Ted Mack’s Original Amateur Hour” (also debuted in 1948) comprised of talented contestants and voting from the audience.

Wikipedia.org defines “reality television” as: a genre of television programming which presents purportedly unscripted dramatic or humorous situations, documents actual events, and features ordinary people instead of professional actors. This includes a large array of programming like game shows, beauty pageants and talent competitions. Nonfiction televison shows like broadcast news and sports are not considered reality television. Even thought the concept has existed for more than 50 years, “reality television” as a term, wasn’t coined until the beginning of the 21st century. And since then, it has experienced an enormous boom in popularity.
