In Season 1, episode 4 Kat contemplated getting a boob job and Pixie showed off her fake ones. Corey got to rock out on drums when his band got a gig because of Corey’s client. The LA Ink crew did several amazing memorial tattoos.
Jesse Metcalfe, an actor from Desperate Housewives, entered the shop. He told Hannah Aitchison that he envisioned his tattoo as a naked angel with wings wrapping from his back to the front of his arm. In her hand would be a lasso that was circling an anatomically correct heart. Pixie Acia walked over and checked out Hannah’s drawing and asked Jesse if someone had broken his heart. He said, “Yah, well everyone has had their heart broken, right?” Jesse said, “This is a reminder not to let it happen again.” Jesse left the shop so Hannah could get to work on the sketch. As he walked away, Hannah turned and puckered her lips and wiggled her fingers showing Pixie that she thought Jesse was hot stuff. Pixie cracked up.
Kat Von D and Pixie went to get new bathing suits at Ashley Paige’s Bikini Boutique and were greeted with hugs from the designer, Ashley Paige. The girls tried on bikinis and Ashley Paige admired their beauty. She said, “Kat is so cute!” The LA Ink stars were in aw of Ashley’s bathing suit designs and tried on a ton of suits. As the girls checked themselves out in the mirror, Kat noticed that her boobs had gotten smaller. She said to Pixie, “Look how small my boobs got compared to your Tig old Bitties.” Pixie suggested that Kat get herself a new pair. Kat said, “Don’t you like my boobs?” Pixie said she did like them, but she thinks that everyone should have fake boobs because she loves her fake boobs and thinks they look beautiful.
Jesse returned to the shop and Hannah showed him her angel drawing. He loved it. He said he picked Hannah to do the job because he had seen her work and thought she was the best tattoo artist around for this type of art. Hannah began the tattoo. She asked Jesse if there was any one guy, one movie, one moment that made him want to be an actor. He said, “Probably the Breakfast Club.” He said it was Judd Nelson in the Breakfast club that inspired him. He sang, “I wanna be an airborne ranger.” Hannah laughed. Jesse told the camera that he knows, as an actor, you have to think of the ramifications of getting a tattoo, but he said that he got to a point in his career where he just said, “F” it! He chose to get the angel tattoo to remember a specific moment in his life and he got the heart on his arm because it reflects his personality and how he wears his heart on his sleeve. When Hannah finished, Jesse checked out his tattoo and loved it. Then they took pictures together in the LA Ink photo booth and gave each other a huge hug goodbye.
Mike Vallely, a Pro Skateboarder and lead singer in a band, stopped by the shop with his wife and two daughters. He was greeted by Pixie. Kat came out and walked the family back to her tattooing station. She pointed out a picture of Mike V that hung on the wall. She said he looked like a GQ model. Mike said he wanted a tattoo of his kids and handed Kat a photo. He asked her to put the picture on his arm. He said he wanted his kids to know that as he ventures out into the world he will be carrying them with him all the way. Mike mentioned that he was heading out on the Warp Tour with his band and would also be skating every day. Kat was happy to be able to hang out with Mike before he hit the road. She said she considers him to be a really good, true friend of hers. Mike referred to himself as a band member, skate boarder and family man. He said he’s very much aware that you get one time around and he’s going to pack as much living into one life time as he can. Mike’s children loved his new tattoo. He said that it will always remind him of how his family supports him in everything that he does and to remember to never take advantage of that.
David, the lead singer and guitar player of Gambler’s Mark, entered the shop and told Pixie he had an appointment to meet with Corey Miller. David brought in a Tennessee Rose guitar along with pictures of it so Corey could get an idea of the tattoo that he wanted.
Pixie put on a white clown wig and roller skates and skated around the shop. She suggested that they do a skate day where they close the shop and people just come to roller skate. Pixie rolled up to meet a student named Marissa who came to meet with Kim Saigh. Pixie asked her if she could skate or dance on the pole and she said, “No, I’m sorry.” Then Pixie introduced her to Kim. Marissa showed Kim a picture of a recovery symbol from the National Eating Disorder Association and said she wanted that as her tattoo to be a reminder of her personal struggle with an eating disorder.
Corey was working on David’s guitar tattoo. Corey said that when he first saw the guitar he thought, “No, I hate doing guitars.” He said they’re very hard to draw because of all the detail and strings. David told the camera that he knew guitar tattoos were difficult, but was sure that Corey would do a great job. They swapped band stories. Corey said that he’d been with his band for six years and David had been with his for three. Corey said that the old joke is that they get together on Monday nights and play with themselves. They both laughed. They talked about doing a show together and Corey suggested that his band open up for David’s band. David was keen on the idea. David thought his finished tattoo was amazing.
Kat walked into the shop with some jelly bra implants that Pixie bought her. Her boobs were high in her shirt and she said, “All I have to say is that it takes a lot of money to look this cheap.” The crew was stunned and Pixie loved it. Corey said, “I dig em, but I’m used to Kat the other way.” Kim said, “I think you look great the way you are and I don’t know why you’d want to change it.” Kat told the team about her visit to the bikini shop with Pixie and how they talked about boob jobs. Corey said, “I can’t believe I’m standing here talking about boobs.” Kat said, “The next subject we’re talking about is tampons so just hold tight.” Corey said, “You know I love boobs, the more the merrier. If they looked great you should get three of them, but I think you look good the way you are.” Pixie said, “Do you want to come to the dark side or are you too chicken?” Then she started flapping her arms and making cluck-cluck noises like a chicken. Kat said that she might want to get one and if she does, then she’ll just do it. Kat said, “Whatever baby wants, baby gets.”
A Magazine Editor named Gus met with Kat. He said that his mother died five years ago and he thinks about her every day. He had gotten a portrait of his mom tattooed a while back, but now wanted Kat to incorporate a picture of a sad looking wolf near his mom’s portrait. He said that his mom really liked wolves. Gus gave Kat free rain on how she wanted to draw the sad wolf.
Meanwhile, Kim was working on the sketch of the recovery eating disorder symbol. Marissa came back to the shop and her mother was with her to give her support. Marissa mentioned that she had struggled with the eating disorder, Anorexia and was successful at beating the disease. This tattoo was to represent her successful recovery. Kim finished the back tattoo and Marissa loved it.
Kat went to get a plastic surgery consultation to find out more about breast implants. She met with Dr. Garth Fisher to find out more about the surgery. All of Pixie’s encouragement finally sunk in and peaked Kat’s curiosity. Kat felt the squishy breast implant mold and the doctor proved it’s durability by throwing the liquid-filled pouch against the wall, using all his might. Kat was shocked and giggled. Dr. Garth thought Kat would be a good candidate for surgery.
An Administrative Assistant named Lori came into the shop to meet with Hannah. She wanted a memorial tattoo of her recently deceased Grandfather. She brought in a sketch of the sacred heart with the term Ohana, which means family in Hawaiian. Next to the heart was a swallow that was to represent her Grandfather.
Gus returned to the shop for his wolf tattoo. He promised to show Kat the photos he had taken of her for his magazine. He wanted the wolf image to be tied in with the portrait of his mother. He said that he and his mom had a close relationship and he always called her first whenever anything major happened in his life. He said, “When I lost my mother there was no one to call.” Kat asked Gus if he does anything special each year to remember his mom. He said that some years, when the day of her death comes around, he’s too depressed and doesn’t get out of bed. He just hangs out at home all day and lets the day pass by.
Corey, Hannah and Pixie were hanging out when Corey got a call from David. Corey was excited to tell the girls that David got his band a gig to open up for David’s band. The girls congratulated him with a high-five and hugs.
Kat’s friend Gus took Kat and Pixie out for drinks to celebrate Kat’s debut on the cover of his magazine called Chord. Kat was the first solowoman and non musician they’d had on the cover. Kat said, “Dude, you made my boobs huge.” Pixie said, “I think they are huge and you don’t need a boob job. I’m stupid. You don’t need to change anything.” Kat decided she’d just stick to the tattoos instead of getting surgery. She said the tattoos have changed her body enough. She thanked Gus for honoring her on the front cover of his magazine. She said that was so special to her.
Lori returned to get her memorial tattoo from Hannah. She loved the sketch that Hannah created. Hannah asked Lori about her Grandfather. She said he was a great guy and always helped her with her ‘68 Camaro. She said that he and her dad would argue over the best way to fix things and she’d come home to see everything from under the hood of her car sprawled over the floor. Hannah said she was really close to her Grandfather too and she idolized him. Lori said that her Grandfather got Lung Cancer about two years ago. She said he went through Chemo and did great, but six months later the Cancer returned and he passed away two months after that. She said, “Thankfully I got to see him the day before he passed away. I kissed him good night and got to say my I love yous to him.” She said she really misses him a lot. Lori said she chose a swallow because her Grandfather was a sailor in the Korean war and when sailors saw a swallow on the ship they knew they were getting close to home. So the swallow represents that her Grandfather is close to her and at home with her and will always be there.
The LA Ink team finished their day by going to watch Corey and his band in action. His band opened for Gambler’s Mark and Corey was rockin hard on the drums. The LA Ink ladies were shaking their stuff and having a great time and Corey was psyched that they were all there to check out the show.
