Biography
Gordon Ramsay is a Scottish celebrity chef, television personality and entrepreneur. He has been awarded a total of twelve Michelin stars, and is currently one of only three chefs in the UK whose restaurant is rated at three Michelin stars. He is best known in the United States as the host of FOX's Hell's Kitchen, which premiered in 2005, and of Kitchen Nightmares, which premiered in 2007, based on his successful British show Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares.
He described his childhood as being difficult with him dealing with an alcoholic father in his autobiography, Humble Pie. He moved out of his parent's home at a young age with another relative. During his time in school, he participated in sports as a football player but could not make a career out of it due to the injuries he had receved playing the sport.
Ramsay enrolled at a local college, sponsored by the Rotarians to study Hotel Management. He soon began to study culinary arts seriously and even moved to London where there where more opportunities for him to become a professional chef.
In 1993, he was head chef of a resturant called La Tante Claire in Chelsea. In 1998, Ramsay opened his own restaurant in Chelsea, named Gordon Ramsay.
Ramsay's first entry into television was in two documentaries: Boiling Point (1998) and Beyond Boiling Point (2000).
In 2004, Ramsay appeared in two British television series. Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares aired on Channel 4, and saw the chef troubleshooting failing restaurants over a one week period. This series ran its fifth season in 2007. Hell's Kitchen was a reality show, which aired on ITV1, and saw Ramsay attempt to train ten British celebrities to be chefs, as they ran a restaurant on Brick Lane which opened to the public for the duration of the show.
In 2005, the FOX network introduced Ramsay to American audiences version of Hell's Kitchen. The program showcased Ramsay's perfectionism and short temper. The show became a hit with audiences in the United States that, in 2005, shortly following the Season 1 finale, Hell's Kitchen was picked up for a second season. In August of 2006, FOX announced that Hell's Kitchen had been picked up for a third season which aired in 2007.
Currently Ramsay is the star and host of a new US version of Kitchen Nightmares which premiered on FOX September 2007.
