The Ballad of Dog and Beth

Dog and Beth

Dog and Beth Chapman are not typical people and didn't meet in your typical, romantic way; they met in 1988 when Beth was in jail and Dog was her bail bondsman. Beth back then worked as executive assistant to Colorado state Senator, Don Sandoval. As his assistant, she had to available immediately whenever he called. She was at a grocery store buying a lemon one afternoon when he paged her and she got out of line to use the phone. Beth was accused of attempted shoplifting. The police ran a routine check and discovered she had a warrant for unpaid traffic tickets. Her father called Dog to bail her out. Though the bail was less than Dog usually bothered with, he decided to bail her out anyway.

Once he bailed her out, Dog called her down to his office to fill out her paperwork. Beth refused. "That's Beth," Dog said of it later, "You can't tell her what to do. Never could. Still can't." Dog finally had to threaten to revoke her bond if she didn't come down.

Once Beth met Dog, though, it was love at first sight. "Oh yes, He will be mine," she said to herself. But at the time, Dog was still married to Lyssa, his third wife. Plus, Dog thought she was too young: he was 35 and Beth was 19. Still, she had his attention, "I've always had a thing for smart women--especially smart women with big tits. The moment I met her, I knew there was a brain behind those breasts."

The bounty hunter quickly became the hunted as Beth took every opportunity to see him. She even followed him, going so far as to test drive a car just so he wouldn't suspect it was her following him. SHe kept the car too long and was arrested for attempting to steal it. Dog posted her bond and she did six month probation and a little prison time. That cost Beth her job with the Senator, but she was determined never to end up in jail again, and just as determined to make Dog her man.

Since she needed a new job, Beth went into the bail bonds business just so she could associate with Dog. She helped him on bonds work and sent him after every client who skipped bail on her. She even deliberately risky clients just so they would run and she could send Dog after them! While Beth had been in jail, Dog had divorced Lyssa, but was already dating his secretary Tawny by the time Beth got out. Tawny eventually coerced Dog into marrying her. Beth decided to marry one of Dogs old street associates, an abusive heroin addict named Keith. Beth and Dog were never really separated though and had an ongoing affair the entire time they were married to others.

In the mid 90s, Dog decided to move to Hawaii and took Tawny, his kids, and his mother to be with him there. When his mother passed away, though, Dog crumbled emotionally and started a downward spiral that led to heavy drug use, the end of his marriage, and the decline of his business. At his lowest point, he called Beth for help. Beth, still in Denver and still married to Keith, ran to his side. Appalled by his heavy drug use and whoring, she forced him to really look at how bad things were. He was living in filth, his health was poor, his kids were hungry, his employees were stealing from him, and he was about to lose his business. "Beth has always been the one person in my life who slaps me in the face when I need to wake up and see how things are."

Even this didn't help him turn around over night. Dog was forced by his insurance company to leave his business in Hawaii for a time and return to Denver. For a time, he and Beth didn't see each other. Friends thought they might be bad for each other; other bondsmen didn't want them working together because they were too formidable a team, and Dog was angry, believing that she had ratted him out to his insurance company. When they finally did meet again, in an alley near "bail bonds row," Dog says, "It was like a scene from a movie. I looked at her and she at me. By the time Beth got to the back of the alley I was already by her side. I grabbed her and put the most passionate kiss on her."

Within a few days Beth's and Dog's families had moved in together. There were tough times as Beth helped Dog finally get off hard drugs and helped him build his business back to what it had been. But that is a story for next week.
