Winner of the Webby Award's 12th Annual People's voice award.
Thanks to the fans, Mike Rowe's 'Mike's Got Mail' segment, a time when he reads his favorite letters, was the People's Voice Winner in this year's 12th Annual Webby Awards on May 6, 2008. He lost the Webby to 'Hometown Baghdad,' from Chat the Planet, a live video blog from several Baghdad youths, a very deserving site.
The other nominees were: NPR's 'Project Song,' Timothy Hamilton Entertainment's 'Project:Freshman,' and Pitch Productions, LLC's 'Stump the Chef.'
The Webby Awards presents two honors in every category in each of its four entry types: Websites, Interactive Advertising, Online Film & Video and Mobile - The Webby Award and The People's Voice Award.
Members of The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences select the nominees for the awards in each category and the winners of the Webby Awards. The online community determine the winners of The People's Voice by voting online. Each year, the People's Voice Awards draw hundreds of thousands of votes from all over the world.
The Webby Awards is an international award honoring excellence on the Internet. It was established in 1996 when the number of Web sites was barely in double digits. The Webbys are presented by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a 550-member body of leading Web experts, business figures, luminaries, visionaries and creative celebrities.
The Academy is a diverse organization that includes members from several genres, such as: musicians, like Beck and David Bowie; Internet inventor Vint Cerf; "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening, also writers and editors from publications such as The New York Times, Wired, Details, Fast Company, The Los Angeles Times, and more.

Last year's awards received over 8,000 entries from over 60 countries and all 50 states and generated over 750 million media impressions worldwide. They came a long way in the last 12 years, honoring over 100+ Website, Interactive Advertising, Online Film & Video, and Mobile categories, at the 11th annual ceremony.
The award has come a long way from its humble beginnings. It is now considered by many to be the premier honor for Web sites. And it is a sign for many as an ultimate achievement in interactive media.
The original team behind the Webby Awards still guides the awards today. Each year brings new challenges and growth. The 12th Annual Webby Awards features over 100 categories, four different entry types, an unprecedented quality of judges, and great marketing and strategic partners like Adweek, Fortune and The Creative Group, the Webby site explains.
So, while Mike may not have won the Webby, being nominated is an honor and winning the People's Voice is a testament to the quality of a great program.
