Biography
Sten Skaar owns the North American and is one of the stars of the Discovery Channel's popular reality show, DEADLIEST CATCH. He runs the ship with family members and serves as its captain. The Skaar family has a long history in commercial fishing that started with Sten's father Erling. He was brought into the business by Captain Sig Hansen's father, Sverre Hansen. This started a friendly Norwegian rivalry that still exists currently.
The North American is a "green" fishing boat which means that it has cutting-edge experimental maritime technology. It was designed by the Skaars to generate greater fuel efficiency and lower emissions. Their engine system is called Gen-Tech, and uses hydraulics to power a backup engine.
