Biography
Keith Colburn is captain of the F/V Wizard and star of the Discovery Channel's popular show, THE DEADLIEST CATCH. The F/V Wizard is a navy ship for World War II that has since been converted into a fishing vessel in 1978.
In 1985, Colburn was a Lake Tahoe ski bum looking for a life and career change. At age 22, he jumped on a plane heading for Kodiak, Alaska. He only came equipped with a romantic vision of working at sea with the rumored big pay-days.
Colburn started out on the Wizard in 1988, and took over the skipper duties in four years later. He took a gamble and purchased it in 2005 when the owner was looking to sell. Colburn, knew that he would have to lease all of his crab quota since he didn't own the boat when IFQs (individual fishing quotas) were issued. The IFQ situation forces Keith to lease his quota from other boats each year to stay afloat commercially.
Captain Colburn's brother Monte joins him as a deckhand and relieves him when his brother is off season.
